French steampunk movie

Avril et le monde truqué is an animated steampunk movie based on the comics by Jacques Tardi. It portrays an alternate-history world in which technology has developed along a different steam-based track since the beginning of the 19th century. Protagonist Avril experiences a hectic Miyazaki-style adventure (e.g. with a talking cat) in places inspired by Jules Verne. That sounds like an appealing combination. Whether the movie will be shown in Swedish cinemas is still not clear, but I will certainly buy the DVD whenever it gets available.

Recension: Professor Frans och den siste Sturen

Summary in English: A review of the Swedish urban fantasy novella Professor Frans och den siste Sturen.

Med författaren Mohamed Omar som ciceron besöker vi i denna långnovell (ca 60 sidor) för andra gången det alternativ-Uppsala som bebos av professor Frans Stenberg, egyptolog med märkliga talanger. I professorns föregående äventyr visade det sig att onda makter (med tydlig inspiration från HP Lovecrafts verk) rörde sig i Uppsalas underjord. Berättelsen Professor Frans och den siste Sturen får mig dock snarare att tänka på Tintin.

Grundintrigen är rakt på sak: 1567 lät Erik XIV döda några av sina politiska motståndare i de så kallade Sturemorden. Den dräpte Nils Stures sista klädedräkt har nyligen återfunnits och placerats på en utställning i Uppsala domkyrka. Kläderna blir dock stulna och professor Frans ombeds att lösa brottet diskret. Falska identiteter, underjordiska rum, nattliga gatuvandringar, med mera, glider in i berättelsen när den skarpsinnige professorn och hans ständige sidekick Henning skrider till verket.

Professor Frans och den siste Sturen skildrar ett alternativhistoriskt Uppsala där KG Hammar har varit ärkebiskop samtidigt som poliskonstaplarna fortfarande bär pickelhuvor och gasljusen fladdrar över trottoarerna – en unikt Omar-sk blandning av nutid och imaginärtid. Långnovellen är en humoristisk Uppsalautflykt som jag snabbt läser igenom med åtskilliga småleenden inför insmugna anspelningar till Sherlock Holmes, Star Wars och Lasse-Majas Detektivbyrå. Mohamed Omar måste ha haft skoj när han hittade på den här skrönan. Skoj hade även jag när jag läste den.

Orvar Säfström och Jimmy Wilhelmsson ska ge ut boken Äventyrsspel – bland mutanter, drakar och demoner, en färgstark coffeetable-volym om det företag och den hobby som definierade starten på mitt yrkesliv för trettio år sedan. Retro-nostalgi, javisst. Jag tillbringade nyligen ett par timmar i en intervju där författarna ville höra anekdoter och fakta från anno dazumal. Det här ska bli skoj att läsa.

Talking to Extraterrestrials

NASA has recently published the book Archaeology, Anthropology, and Interstellar Communication, in which more than a dozen scholars analyze what challenges mankind will face the day Earth gets in touch with an extrasolar civilization. The 300-page book looks, for example, to archaeology and anthropology for clues to decoding extraterrestrial messages. Editor Douglas A. Vakoch explains what issues that might entail:

“Like archaeologists who reconstruct temporally distant civilizations from fragmentary evidence, SETI [Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence] researchers will be expected to reconstruct distant civilizations separated from us by vast expanses of space as well as time. And like anthropologists, who attempt to understand other cultures despite differences in language and social customs, as we attempt to decode and interpret extraterrestrial messages, we will be required to comprehend the mindset of a species that is radically Other.”
